Brett Eldredge goes far beyond cowboy hats and banjos.

In his sophomore album, “Illinois,” the 29-year-old country singer proves his sound doesn’t conform to the stereotypes set by traditional country music by injecting a variety of styles.

The record opens with “Fire” and maintains an upbeat tempo through “You Can’t Stop Me,” featuring Eldredge’s tour mate for CMT’s Suits and Boots Tour, Thomas Rhett. The blues infused track showcases the album’s diversity as it jumps to the singer’s current single “Lose My Mind.”

Things start to slow down six songs in with “If You Were My Girl” and it’s sure to give listeners heart eyes while “Shadow” delves into completely new territory giving the album a heavy rock vibe, something Eldredge does surprisingly well.

Rest assured, fans can find familiarity in the title track “Illinois,” which stays true to his musical roots and songwriting skills. Other standouts include “Just A Taste” and “Drunk on Your Love,” both of which maintain catchy melodies and karaoke potential.

In a time where musicians are constantly pushing genre boundaries it’s refreshing to see Eldredge redefine country music with a fresh perspective. Country fan or not, there’s something for everyone on “Illinois” whether it be a love song or solo dance party jam.

“Illinois” hits shelves Friday, September 11.
