UNO Senior Wins Nationwide Scholarship

UNO broadcast major Matthew Barros was one of 13 students, from 10 different campuses nationwide, to receive an electronic media scholarship in the Broadcast Education Association’s 2014-2015 competition. Of the 13 recipients, Matthew was awarded one of two $5,000 Abe Voron Scholarships, the BEA’s top scholarships.

MavRadio.fm faculty adviser, Jodeane Brownlee, said based on the amount of effort and dedication Matthew puts forth in and outside of the classroom, he is a deserving recipient of such a prestigious award. “He spends several hours in the lab perfecting new techniques for his radio production. His desire to constantly improve his writing and production skills is remarkable. Students look forward to listening to his production, and he has set the bar high for his peers,” she said.

The criteria for selection included providing substantial evidence of superior academic performance as well as high integrity and a well-articulated sense of personal and professional responsibility.

Matthew volunteers his time creating and writing promotions that air on MavRadio.fm. He also works as a production assistant for UNO-TV and is currently an intern for University Communications at UNO.
