College World Series: Day 3 Recap

With the threat of elimination looming for both teams, the Oregon State Beavers defeated the Washington Huskies 14-5 in the sixth game of the 2018 College World Series.  

The game was evenly matched going in to the bottom of the third inning. However, Washington’s Nick Kahle hit an RBI double to score two runs, followed by Joe Wainhouse who singled to left field to score Kahle, made the score 3-0 Huskies.

Oregon State responded in the top of the fifth, with RBI’s coming from Tyler Malone and Preston Jones. It was finished by Jones coming home from third base off of a wild pitch, making the score 4-3 in favor of the Beavers.

Washington tied it up in the bottom of the fifth when Mason Cerrillo scored off a Wainhouse single. The Huskies regained the lead when Levi Jordan singled to left, sending Kahle home to make it 5-4 Washington.

The game then went into a rain delay at 3:16 p.m. and would not get back underway until 7:47 p.m., ending the 4 hour and 31 minute delay.  

Once the game was restarted, it was all Beavers.  They scored four runs in the top of the seventh, with two of them being off of a three run opposite field home run by Kyle Nobach to right field. In the top of the eighth, Malone homered to right field, followed by RBI’s from Adler Rutschman, Michael Gretler, and Jack Anderson to take a 14-5 win.

This marks the end for Washington’s season, with the Huskies finishing 35-26 in their first appearance in the College World Series. Oregon State moves on to play the loser of the Mississippi State vs North Carolina matchup, which will take place June 19th at 10 a.m.
