Haunted Heartland 2021

School of Communication journalists share stories of the Heartland

(Omaha, NEB.)- We’ve heard of coulrophobia or at least, in broader terms, a person’s intense fear of clowns. This year, MavRadio.FM reporter Crystal Kwaw examines how common this deep-rooted psychological response to make-up clad jesters is among folks in the United States. This, and thirteen additional stories, are set to air live, Oct. 28 starting at 6 p.m., and will air again Oct. 31 at the same time. The show will also be shared on the MavRadio podcast, MavCast.

“I’m excited to continue the Haunted Heartland tradition with MavRadio.FM and explore so many unique stories around Omaha,” said Ana Bellinghausen, general manager of MavRadio.FM. “As a first-time host, I can’t wait to be a part of something I’ve listened to the past three years.”

In previous shows, unexplained phenomena occurred among multiple reporters in the field. The result, said producers, is a dynamic conversation among the reporters on location, and the hosts in the studio. MavRadio.FM Faculty Adviser Jodeane Brownlee said, “Going live is the best field experience our reporters can get. Ultimately, it’s their show, and they take that ownership very seriously. Regardless of an occasional raccoon in a field or local ghost hunters in a building after dark, they continue to share their stories professionally.”

If you’re longing for the day of sitting around the radio, entering the theater of your mind, then listen to Haunted Heartland 2021 this Oct. 28 at 6 p.m. Our investigators explore and share their findings on the Hooper church and its cemetery, coulrophobia, Dia De Los Muertos, the lure of horror flicks, and much more. It’s the perfect addition to any late October evening.

In addition to experience, reporters and anchors boast multiple national, regional, and statewide awards associated with the annual live event. Along with coulrophobia, the night’s other topics include: Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo’s Ghouls and Glow tradition, Hooper’s Church and its mysterious parsonage, the gruesome details behind North Omaha’s Mystery Manor, the global traditions of Halloween, a psychic medium realizing her gift, and anxiety, both in general, as well as the type movie-goers may experience during a horror movie.
