Omaha Softball Gets 2014 Underway

A year after finishing 36-7 and second in the Summit League, the Omaha Softball team is set for their 2014 campaign.

The Mavericks begin this season at the Red Desert Classic in St. George, Utah.  The Mavericks return 10 players from last year’s team, including pitchers Dana Elsasser and Kat Barrow.  Omaha also returns a fair amount of offense in the trio of Allie Mathewson (.395, 11 HR, 36 RBI), Campbell Ditto (.376, 7 HR, 30 RBI) and Amber Lutmer (.304, 12 HR, 47 RBI).  In total, Omaha returns seven of their regular starting nine from last season.

The Mavericks are slated to play five games at the Red Desert Classic.  They begin on Friday, February 7 when Omaha will take on Weber State at 2:30 (CT).  Omaha will play two games on both Saturday and Sunday, including Utah Valley (2:30) and Southern Utah (5:00) on Saturday, with Idaho State (12:00) and Utah State (2:30) scheduled for Sunday.

Also of note at the Red Desert Classic is head coach Jeanne Scarpello, who is just one win shy of 600 for her career.  Scarpello (599-188-1) is in her 15th year at the helm and is the all-time winningest coach in school history.
